The North Wexford Gamers
15th June 2009
Taken from: http://northwexfordgamers.org/
The North Wexford Gamers are a group of players who play Warhammer Fantasy Battle and Warhammer 40k in north Wexford.
“Our club is focused on the social element of gaming rather then winning at all costs. We believe that gaming is a rewarding and challenging hobby, but one that is to be enjoyed with others.”
Check out their forums at http://northwexfordgamers.org/forum/

RINIWA is an association of wargames players from both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland who have come together to promote the wargames hobby on the island of Ireland and to represent internationally the interests of competition wargames players in Ireland. This is important because the field of international wargames competition is becoming increasingly organised and we need an umbrella organisation to make our voice heard by joining the International Wargames Federation. RINIWA is not a federation of wargames clubs in Ireland as the diverse interests of wargamers make consensus at that level difficult. It is instead a players association focused on one aspect of the hobby, competition wargames.
RINIWA is a non-profit and non-political organisation that is run by players for players. Any money accrued by RINIWA will be ploughed back into wargaming in Ireland. Initially we focused on supporting the DBM ruleset for ancient historical battles. This is because it was the most popular ruleset for international wargames competitions (and competitions within Ireland). Since 2008 we have supported both DBMM (DBM’s successor) and the Field of Glory (FOG) rulesets for ancient historical battles. Given sufficient time and member interest we may branch out into other areas of the wargames hobby in the future.
RINIWA is a member of the International Wargames Federation (IWF)
Contacting RINIWA
The easiest way to get in contact with RINIWA is via email at riniwa@iworg.com
Our management committee consists of members from both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland (2 members each).

Board-gaming Event
26th May 2009
Everybody, whether completely new to board-gaming, or a long-term fan is welcome.
There will be longer-duration games starting at 11:00 and 3:30, with an experienced player there to show people how to play. Spaces in these games will go to those who have pre-signed up for them, and any extra spaces to anybody on the day who wishes to play.
Plenty of quicker games will be going on all the time, so there’s no need to sign up to the longer games if you don’t want to. However, if you’re interested in one of them, and are SURE you’ll be there, then please do sign up.
Players should have time to go out for lunch during the gap between games. Sandwiches are available for sale in Models Inc in case of emergency
The following games have scheduled start times,
and pre-sign-up lists further down.
Arkham Horror: 2-6 players, co-operative http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/15987
Arkham Horror is a cooperative adventure game themed around H.P Lovecraft’s Cthulhu Mythos. Players choose from 16 Investigators and take to the streets of Arkham. Before the game, one of the eight Ancient Ones is chosen and it’s up to the Investigators to prevent it from breaking into our world. During the course of the game, players will upgrade their characters by acquiring skills, allies, items, weapons, and spells. It’s up to the players to clean out the streets of Arkham by fighting many different types of monsters, but their main goal is to close portals to other dimensions that are opening up around town. With too many portals open the Ancient One awakens and the players only have one last chance to save the world. Defeat the Ancient One in combat!
BattleStar Galactica: 3-6 players, semi co-operative http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/37111
Battlestar Galactica is an exciting game of mistrust, intrigue, and the struggle for survival. Based on the epic and widely-acclaimed new Sci Fi Channel series, Battlestar Galactica: The Board Game puts players in the role of one of ten of their favorite characters from the show. Each playable character has their own abilities and weaknesses, and must all work together in order for humanity to have any hope of survival. However, one or more players in every game secretly side with the Cylons. Players must attempt to expose the traitor while fuel shortages, food contaminations, and political unrest threatens to tear the fleet apart.
Descent: 2-5 players http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/17226
A dungeon crawl game using modular boards and scenarios. One player acts as the Overlord, controlling the forces of evil - monsters, traps, and general mayhem, while the others take on the roles of adventurers co-operatively exploring a fantasy dungeon.
Shadows Over Camelot: 3-7 players, co-operative, with a traitor http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/15062
In most games, players compete against each other to achieve victory. Shadows over Camelot proposes a journey of a very different kind, where you and your fellow players, as Knights of the Round Table, will collaborate to jointly defeat… the game! At first glance, this task seems simple enough. After all, shouldn’t a band of young and noble Knights - fleet of foot and sound of mind - easily defeat a game that plays itself? Alas your quest is further complicated by the ever-present possibility of a Traitor in your midst, biding his time, waiting to strike at the worst possible moment…
A Touch of Evil: 2-6 players, competitive or co-operative http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/35815
A Touch of Evil is a fast-paced game of fiendish creatures, dashing Heroes, and high-adventure. Each player takes on the role of a unique monster-hunting Hero, racing against time to stop the forces of darkness from claiming another foothold in the world of man. Only by investigating the town and building your Hero’s strength can you hope to hunt down the Supernatural Villain to his Lair and defeat him in an epic Showdown. Players can race Competitively to be the first to defeat the Villain and save the town, or they can work together Cooperatively to defeat a much stronger Villain. The game will be played in competitive, not co-operative mode, during the scheduled game, as this is the default mode of play for the game.
Last Night on Earth: 2-5 players http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/29368
Last Night on Earth, The Zombie Game is a survival horror board game that pits small-town Heroes head-to-head against a limitless horde of Zombies (players can play on the Hero team or as the Zombies). A modular board randomly determines the layout of the town at the start of each game and there are several different scenarios to play. Fast Paced Game Play with easy to learn rules allows players to jump right into the action, while strategic depth and strong co-operative Play keeps the game interesting. (not currently scheduled, may be if there is sufficient demand/someone to run it)
Signup:
If you’re certain you’ll be there, then you can sign up for a scheduled game. Email staff [at] boardgamesday-ireland.org to sign up. Please include a mobile phone number, so I can call to confirm you’re coming if you’re late for a scheduled game. Please, if you can’t make it, do email me as far in advance as possible and I’ll remove you from the list - the other players are to an extent relying on signed up people to show up. If you’re not sure if you’ll make it, then don’t worry, just come along and there’ll be gaming for anybody dropping by. You don’t need to sign up to any scheduled games even if you’re planning on playing all day long.
If there is enough demand to schedule a 2nd running of one of these games we’ll try our best to accomodate.

BattleTech returns to Gaelcon
12th May 2009
BattleTech is back at Gaelcon! This year marks the game’s 25th anniversary – making it the longest consistently published science fiction game, and we’ve got a series of events planned to satisfy everyone’s need for mechanical carnage.
Once per month between May and October, in association with the Dublin Games Guild and Models Inc we will be running a game from the Jihad Turning Points: Luthien campaign pack. This story-based campaign’s battles are well-suited to both introduce new players to the BattleTech game and universe and to highlight to integrated and scalable nature of the current ruleset to existing ones. This will cumulate in an epic battle at Gaelcon itself using the new Quickstrike rules designed to allow for quick battles while retaining the feel of the more detailed core game.

The first game takes place on Saturday May 16th, starting at 12PM in Models Inc, 65 Upper Dorset Street, Dublin 1.
Game 1: Traitor’s Kiss.
Dateline: 1st January 3068
The Draconis Combine has long stood on the values of Edo-period Japan. A ruling class of Samurai and nobility above the commoners, criminals and unproductives; with the elite MechWarriors of the Draconis Combine Mustered Soldery standing above them all. But Coordinator Theodore Kurita has been making progressive changes – allowing yakuza and women to fight in BattleMechs, allying with their age-old enemies against the Clans, and generally bettering the lot of the common man and woman. Standing against him is the Black Dragon Society – a shadowy cabal of conservative samurai who want to return to the good old days.
Taking advantage of the confusion following the breakup of the Second Star League and the fanatic of Word of Blake’s subsequent attacks on the Inner Sphere, the Black Dragons have decided to strike, daring to foment rebellion on the Black Pearl of Luthien – capital planet of the entire Draconis Combine. Rebel forces have captured the Voice of the Dragon compound, giving them control over the network that feeds the people news and propaganda, and now they move against the Imperial Palace itself. Standing in their way is a small number of the Coordinator’s Bodyguards and other loyal samurai.
Lorien Trust Live Roleplaying
12th May 2009
The Lorien Trust or the LT as it is more commonly referred to, is a group involved in running live role playing events. While primarily based in the UK there is a strong Irish involvement. Here is some information taken from their website about what the LT is all about.
Taken from: http://www.lorientrust.com/realworld/ltinfopage.htm
We are the Lorien Trust and we run fantasy live role playing events throughout the United Kingdom.
Fantasy live role playing was created when a group of role players wondered what it would be like to actually play their table top roleplay characters for real. The idea quickly took hold and plans were set in motion to try this out. In 1982 a club called Treasure Trap opened, operating from Peckforton Castle, a 19th century mock castle in Cheshire. This club founded most of the basic concepts and ideas still used in live role playing today. During the four years of Treasure Trap’s existence, many players who attended Peckforton started up their own clubs around the country. These clubs continued to expand and some are still running today. Although each club or company has its own set of rules, most of them are based on the same underlying principles.
In Britain there is now a wide variety styles of live role playing events available. These include low fantasy, modern horror, Vampire, sci-fi and High fantasies such as ourselves, the Lorien Trust. These events last from a few hours linear adventure or tavern night to full weekend themed events.
We run large scale battle and theme weekends through out the year. We also run a system of sanctioned events. This system allows smaller, subsidiary events to take place using the Lorien Trust’s rules system, game world and campaign. Any club, group or organisation may run a sanctioned event, provided they gain permission to use the rules system, game world and campaign for their event from the Lorien Trust.
The Lorien Trust has been running the largest Live Action Role Playing (LARP) events in Europe since 1992, using the game world of Erdreja. A multi factional, high fantasy/ medieval style, world of conflict and diplomacy, on a egg shaped world. The main event each year is the Gathering which sees the largest live action battles in Europe with over 1200 players on each side.
Live role playing can provide a means of expressing your imagination in ways that are not available in ordinary life. In moderation, this chance to step beyond the bounds of everyday reality enhances everyone’s enjoyment of the game.
Live role playing is the chance to meet hundreds of new people from all walks of life and age groups. Currently the youngest registered player in the Lorien Trust system is under 2 years old, while the oldest is well over 60! People who live role play come from all walks of life - teachers, soldiers, students, doctors, I.T. professionals and the police to name a few. You don’t need to have acting experience, you don’t need to know much about role playing. You just need to come along.
The Lorien Trust web site was created by Vagabond, Jericho, Topknot, Shaggy, Mort, and Pete Gorrell with thanks to Kina, mighty bullet head, Cormac, the Nurse, the rest of the usual suspects, and a cast of thousands. Oh yeah and that bloke who has far too much time, you all know who i mean.
